Compress a video to the size you need
Pick a target, such as 16 MB for WhatsApp or 25 MB for email, and FB Media Tools calculates the bitrate to land just under it. Optionally scale to 720p for a sharper result at small sizes.
How the size target works
File size is simply bitrate × duration. We take your target, subtract room for audio (96 kbps) and container overhead, and give the rest to the video encoder. A 60-second clip at 25 MB gets roughly 3.1 Mbps, which is plenty for 1080p. At 8 MB the same clip gets about 1 Mbps, so dropping to 720p keeps it crisp.
If the estimate turns red, the bitrate is too low for the resolution: shorten the clip with the trim handles or choose a lower max resolution.
Typical limits (2026)
| Email attachments (Gmail, Outlook) | ~20–25 MB |
| Discord free uploads | 10 MB |
| WhatsApp video (standard send) | sent as 16 MB clips historically; check your app |

Questions & answers
Will compression reduce quality?
Some, by definition. Because we use a modern H.264 encoder and pick the resolution sensibly, results at 2–4 Mbps are hard to tell apart from the original on a phone.
