Download Facebook video captions as SRT or a transcript
Many Facebook videos carry a caption track: uploaded by the creator or generated automatically. Paste the link to save it with timings (SRT/VTT) or as plain text you can quote, translate or search.
- Open the video in your browser while logged in (it must play for you).
- Computer: press Ctrl+U (Mac: ⌥+⌘+U). Android Chrome: add
view-source:before the address. - Select all (Ctrl+A), copy, and paste it below.
Works with Reels, videos, live replays, photos, group posts, and fb.watch or share links
Which format do you need?
| Format | Use it for |
|---|---|
| SRT | Video editors (Premiere, CapCut, DaVinci), YouTube uploads, VLC |
| VTT | HTML5 video players and websites |
| TXT | Reading, quoting, translating, notes, accessibility |
The transcript strips numbering and timestamps and joins each caption into readable lines. If a video has no caption track, the Captions tab doesn’t appear. That means Facebook has none for it, not that we failed to find it.
Caption quality
Automatic captions are machine-generated and can contain mistakes, especially with names, music or accents. Always proofread before publishing a quote.
Your own videos
Creators: downloading your captions is a quick way to reuse a transcript in a blog post, a YouTube upload or a newsletter.
Questions & answers
Why doesn’t my video show a Captions tab?
Facebook only provides caption files for videos that have them. Some videos have captions turned off by the uploader, and auto-captions aren’t generated for every language.
Can I get captions in another language?
We list the caption tracks Facebook offers for that video. Use the TXT transcript with any translation tool for other languages.
Only download videos you own, that are licensed for reuse, or that you have the creator’s permission to save. Respect copyright and Facebook’s Terms. FB Media Tools does not host any content; files come directly from Facebook’s servers to your device.
