Save a private Facebook video you can already watch

Links to private posts can’t be opened by anyone but you, including us. So instead of a link, you give FB Media Tools the page your own browser already loaded. It is read on this device and never sent anywhere.

  1. Open the video in your browser while logged in (it must play for you).
  2. Computer: press Ctrl+U (Mac: ⌥+⌘+U). Android Chrome: add view-source: before the address.
  3. Select all (Ctrl+A), copy, and paste it below.
Parsed on this device; never sent to us.

Why page source, and is it safe?

A private group video or friends-only post only plays when you are logged in. A download service would need your Facebook password or cookies to fetch it. That is a serious risk, and you should never hand them over to any website.

The page source your browser shows (view-source:) already contains the video’s stream addresses. FB Media Tools’s parser runs entirely in this tab: we don’t receive the source, your session or the video. The text box is cleared as soon as it has been read.

You can check this yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and paste. No request is made with your page source.

Step by step on a computer

  1. Open the private video or post on facebook.com and make sure it plays.
  2. Press Ctrl+U (Windows) or ⌥+⌘+U (Mac) to open the page source.
  3. Press Ctrl/⌘+A then Ctrl/⌘+C.
  4. Paste into the box above. The video appears with all qualities.

On Android

In Chrome, open the post, then edit the address to start with view-source: and press Enter. Long-press, select all, copy, paste here. iPhone Safari has no view-source, so use a computer.

Only download private content with the consent of the people in it and of whoever posted it.
FAQ

Questions & answers

Does this work for Facebook Stories?

Stories are only visible while logged in, so links don’t work. The page-source method reads the video addresses from the Story page your browser loaded. Facebook changes the Story layout often, and we have verified the parser on regular video pages, so if a Story isn’t detected, please tell us via the contact page.

Do you need my Facebook login?

No, and no website should ask for it. Never enter your Facebook password or session cookies into a downloader.
