Facebook video and Reels sizes, 2026
What to upload, and what Facebook actually stores and streams, based on Meta’s guidance and on inspecting real Facebook videos.
Quick reference
| Placement | Aspect ratio | Recommended size |
|---|---|---|
| Reels | 9:16 | 1080×1920 |
| Feed video (vertical) | 4:5 | 1080×1350 |
| Feed video (square) | 1:1 | 1080×1080 |
| Feed / Watch (landscape) | 16:9 | 1920×1080 |
| Stories | 9:16 | 1080×1920 |
Upload MP4 or MOV with H.264 video and AAC audio for the most predictable processing. These are the formats third-party guides and Meta’s ad specs consistently recommend; Meta’s organic Reels help page is rendered dynamically and changes, so check it if you need the current maximum length or file size.
What Facebook actually delivers (our measurements)
We inspected public videos on NASA’s Facebook Page in October 2026 (public-domain content) and recorded what Facebook serves:
| Video | Ready-made file | Top stream | Audio |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 s clip, uploaded 2026 | H.264 1280×720, ~945 kbps | AV1 1920×1080, ~1.3 Mbps | HE-AAC ~74 kbps |
| 60 s clip, 2026 | H.264 (HD) | AV1 up to 1440p | AAC |
| 3 min video, 2021 | H.264 (HD) | VP9 1080p, ~3.7 Mbps | AAC ~49 kbps |
| 2 h 27 min live replay | H.264 (HD) | H.264 1080p, ~1.5 Mbps | AAC ~65 kbps |
Three takeaways for creators:
- Upload at least 1080p. Facebook only serves resolutions up to what you uploaded, and its top stream is the only one above 720p.
- Facebook re-encodes everything, to AV1 or VP9 for new uploads and H.264 for others, at fairly low bitrates. Sharp, well-lit footage with little noise survives best.
- Audio is stored at modest bitrates (roughly 50–130 kbps AAC). Mix voice clearly; don’t rely on subtle detail.
Reels safe zones
Keep text and logos out of roughly the top 14%, bottom 35% and 6% on each side (Meta’s published margins for Reels ads), because the caption, buttons and profile overlay those areas. Check your video with the safe-zone tool, and convert landscape footage with the Reels resizer.
